Origin of Mother's Day

Celebrating Mother's Day is a great way to let your mother know what she means to you, but do you know how the holiday came about?

Mother's Day is one of the most celebrated days in our calendars. Mother's Day is a day to honour motherhood and celebrate the bond between mothers and their children. It may seem like a day started by commerce, but the origins of Mother's Day go back even to ancient Greek and Roman civilisations in which mother goddesses were worshipped. They worshipped Rhea, who was the mother of the Gods.

As Christianity spread across Europe, these festivities evolved into religious celebrations honouring the Virgin Mary as the "Mother of God".

In the 1870s, one Anna Jarvis campaigned for an official holiday to honour all mothers, having been inspired by her own mother. Jarvis' work was successful and a day to honour mothers was put on the agenda in several countries around the world. This became Mother's Day.

It became an official holiday in the United States in 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson signed a law declaring it an annual event. Since then, it has become a day celebrated worldwide, although many countries have their own unique traditions - including celebrating on different days of the year. Whether we send flowers or set aside time to spend with our mothers, however we choose to celebrate the day; let's take a moment to acknowledge and thank our mothers and all they do!

How is Mother's Day celebrated?

Many people choose to send their mothers flowers or chocolates as a sweet gesture of appreciation.

Others surprise their mothers with breakfast in bed, crafts or a homemade card. Some families spend the day together. They go for walks, play board games or visit a museum or zoo.

If you live further apart or are unable to visit your mother for whatever reason, you can also call her (video) and send a gift by post. This way, you still show that you are thinking of her. However you celebrate Mother's Day, remembering will certainly make your mother feel extra loved and appreciated!

Is Mother's Day an official holiday?

Mother's Day is considered a public holiday all over the world, but it is not an official government holiday in all countries.

Is Mother's Day celebrated internationally?

Do people around the world celebrate Mother's Day? The answer is yes! In many countries around the world, people take the time to put their mother in the spotlight and thank her. On this special day, families worldwide show their love and appreciation for their mothers. Although customs may vary from region to region, Mother's Day remains an internationally celebrated holiday.

Is Mother's Day important?

Are you wondering, "Is Mother's Day important?" Then we have the answer for you. Absolutely, mothers do so much for us, giving us love, care and support. Unfortunately, they don't always get enough recognition and appreciation in return. Generally, we take our mothers' love for granted. Taking one day in the year to show your appreciation is the least you can do in return for the most important woman in your life. This coming Mother's Day, let's take the time to show how much we appreciate everything our mothers do for us.

What's part of Mother's Day?

The best thing about Mother's Day is that it always falls on a Sunday. So almost everyone is free to do something special for their mother. What really belongs on Mother's Day? That's different for everyone, but here's a list of what most people choose:

  • Send flowers
  • Photo printed chocolates delivered
  • Breakfast in bed
  • Homemade cards
  • Taking a walk
  • Playing board games
  • Visiting a museum, park or zoo

Mother's day among Muslims

Muslims around the world honour their mothers just as many other cultures and traditions do. There is no specific date set for honouring mothers in the Muslim community; instead, the day is celebrated throughout the year.

In Islamic tradition, mothers are held in high regard, and are often called "the joy of life".
