It was introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement, a coalition of kindness NGOs from various countries. The movement began in Tokyo in 1997 when several kindness organisations from around the world came together at a conference. The following year, they officially launched World Kindness Day as an annual observance.

The purpose for this day is to highlight good actions in the community, focus on the positivity and on the power that kindness has.
