The First Holy Communion is a special moment every year, during which the communicant is in the spotlight for a day. It calls for a celebration and is a fantastic gifting opportunity. It is a day the child will remember forever! What should you give a communicant for their First Communion? We hope to inspire you to make the communicant's First Communion unforgettable with the gift ideas below.

What is Communion?

The First (Holy) Communion is a festive occasion in the Roman Catholic Church for children of around 6 or 7 years of age, who participate in the celebration of Eucharist for the first time. At school they are taught about the Church, the sacraments, the story of Jesus and the Eucharist. The culmination of these lessons is the First Communion, a festive mass, in which the first communicants light their communion candle and later receive their first host. After the celebration in the church, the guests are often also invited to the communion party, for which the family gathers at the communicant's house or a special decorated location.

The First Holy Communion is a special day for both the child and their parents. The communicant chooses to take their first steps towards the Christian faith, which calls for a celebration. These days, toys are often given as gifts, whereas in the past these were more symbolic gifts such as first Bibles, silver or gold chains with crosses or candles. These are our ideas:

Gift tip #1: Personalised guestbook

A personalised guestbook is such a great gift! All of the party guests can write down a special message or congratulations for the communicant, making the guestbook not just an amazing gift, but a wonderful keepsake, too. Creating a personalised Communion guestbook is easy. Simply add the name, photo and / or text of your choice to one of our beautiful Communion designs, and we will print the guestbook for you with great care and precision and in full colour.

Gift tip #2: Personalised Communion candle

If you would like your First Communion gift to last for a good long while, go for a Communion candle. This personalised candle can serve as a gift at the party, be lit during Communion itself or used as decoration. The candle has a burning time of no less than 40 hours, allowing the communicant to enjoy the special gift for a long time. Simply add the photo and / or name of your choice to create this truly personal gift.

Gift tip #3: Personalised heart-shaped necklace pendant

Jewellery is a classic Communion gift. In the past, this often meant a gold or silver necklace with a cross of Jesus pendant. There are other options for jewellery gifts that are a little more contemporary, such as a heart-shaped pendant engraved with the communicant's name of text of your choice. This creates a truly special pendant and keepsake to keep close to their heart.

Gift tip #4: Personalised Communion moneybox

Similar to birthdays, the communicant may also receive greeting cards with personal messages and congratulations. A handwritten card is a classic and, if the communicant is lucky, there may be money included inside the card or envelope. Money can be a good gift if you are unsure what the recipient would like. If you're thinking of doing this, make it interesting by adding the money to a personalised moneybox! The personalised Communion moneybox is made of sturdy ceramic with a glossy finish, giving your personal design featuring the name and / or photo of the communicant that perfect finishing touch.

Gift tip #5: Personalised candy jar

A Communion is cause for celebration, which should always include some tasty treats. Surprise the communicant with a large personalised candy jar, filled with the tastiest sweets. Go for gummy bears, liquorice allsorts, tumtums, wine gums or a tasty fruit sweets mix. The candy jar can be personalised on both sides, with a sticker featuring your design. Add the photo and / or name of your choice and you're all set to surprise the recipient.

YourSurprise wishes each and every communicant the very best for their First Communion! If you're looking for more Communion gifts or Communion party favours, check out our ‘Communion favours’ page.
